Lately I've found myself translating search terms into other languages when I exhaust all of the applicable English-language results. There's a whole world of permacuture out there that's being lost when we limit ourselves to English (I recently started teaching myself Russian because of all of the seemingly great Russian-language material that goes right over my head.)
Well, Youtube is a great place to start since, as long as you're on a computer and the
video has subtitles, you can translate those subtitles to English. With that in mind, I've translated the word "permaculture" into every language offered by Google Translate and linked to the relevant Youtube search results.
Not every language has search results (at the time of posting), and some search results have a mix of things that are clearly
permaculture related and things which are completely unrelated (one of the results had a bunch of videos about dental work for some reason.) Some of them are apparently the names of bands (presumably in a different language than the one intended to be searched for.) Many languages share the same translation (many European languages use some variation of Permakultur, and there are only 3 different translations across all Slavic languages.) Many more languages just use the English word.
Note that some cultures have different words or phrases to described the same kinds of things that fall under the
permaculture umbrella in English. Those words and phrases have not been included here unless that is what Google Translate returned as the translation for
permaculture.
I initially had it set up as one search that would look for the word "Permaculture" in every language, but Youtube is finicky with long, complicated search terms, especially in multiple languages. It was merely returning a dozen or so videos in a variety of languages and then saying that there are no more search results. Instead I've decided to break it up into individual search results for each unique translation of Permaculture. It's a little more work that way, but provides more relevant results.
To translate videos, just turn on subtitles and then select your language of choice or the "auto-translate" option. This option isn't available on mobile (yet) and isn't available for videos that don't have any form of subtitle included.
