Collect weeds (future compost) in your yard or garden, brewery (spent grains), coffee shops, check for free wood chips or hugel culture.

i would also check grocery stores near you to see if they have anything that's not in condition for consumption. some will let you remove it for composting.
local farms are also a good source for free manure, often they have more than what they know what to do with.
