About to plant an American persimmon and 2 service berry trees. Any pointers? I’d love to prep and make the best soil and location scenario for them. Thanks
Both of them seem to grow just fine here in the southern Appalachian foothills. Only problem is keeping the birds off of the service berries. You'll see possums and coons in the persimmon trees, but there still seems to be plenty. Bears and deer like them as well once they hit the ground. Pigs too, I imagine. Our persimmons seem to be slow to grow and slow to bear, so be patient.
Our Wyoming property has Service Berries growing wild all over it. It grows about 6 ft tall and about 4 ft across out in the full sun amongst the sagebrush, like a large shrub form. It grows more spindley and treelike under the aspen trees in the cooler shade and more moisture. So I think it seems to be pretty tough and not to pickey about where it grows.
I'll echo the others here: both of those are pretty unfussy and trouble-free plants that don't need anything all that specific in the way of soil and location. Persimmons are slow-growing, and they aren't self-pollinating; however, they are pollinated by wind rather than insects, so if you're in an area where they grow wild you likely don't need a second tree for pollination.
