I bought some raw chia seeds for health food and thought maybe I could plant them. Wherever I dropped them a plant started showing up, thus I thought that it was my chia. We have one out in front of the porch that grew up REALLY tall (in fact now it is sort of laying over as if heavy with the flowers) and I'm still thinking this is my chia plant. I was looking up how to harvest the seeds and noticed the plant in the video looked nothing like what is growing. I started looking up images and NONE of them look like this plant. So my question is: IS this my chia plant, and if not what is it?

Doesnt look like any chia i have ever grown. And I've grownboth types. The plats should have salvia like flowers and smell very aromatic in a good way. And i have grown chia from store seed too.

This is NOT chia!

Jordan, what do you mean "both types" ? Are they both salvia hispanica, or another specie?

Sorry Ashley, I know a lot of plants but never saw this one before, even though the pics are not very clear and I do not even know from which family they can be. Some ID sites exists, with botanists, but you may need clearer photos. It looks wooly, is it? Is the stem square or round, do you show the entire leaf, or is it a composed leaf? How are the petals etc...

I hoped it was this one! California native I think !
So less day sensitive than the hispanica... (mine are not yet flowering, and I am quite south)
Do you know how I can get salvia columbariae?
Does the seed tastes and look the same?

I had problems with the hispanica flowering also. Waiting until late November..,....when it's freezing cold at night. The columbariae blooms and ripens by august for me.

Seed is pretty much the same looks and taste.

The flower is wirey, the plant itself is not woolly. I tried my best to show the entire leaves in the pictures. I think they are all opposite of each other. I am now realizing that I am seeing these things everywhere on the sides of roads. The stem is round
