To get your sweet pea seeds off to a good start and won’t have to worry about birds and rotting seeds, start sprouting your seeds indoors. By doing this you will be sure that the seeds won’t rot before they sprout under the soil resulting in a successful plant with beautiful flowers!
Pre-sprouting Sweet Pea seeds Indoors
Have you considered laying the seeds out in toilet paper that's been folded over the seeds, then moistened? You could space the seeds out at whatever spacing you desire, and then unroll and plant it like seed tape. I just thought of this, unsure if it would work.
I've been using this method for years. I Fill a plastic pots to the half with seed starting potting mix, i drop three sprouted seeds in every pots and i gently cover to the top. I use a spray to water smoothly. The soil should stay constantly moist, but not soggy. My sweet peas will emerge in three or four days. By this way i will have a very good start and won't have to worry about birds and rotting seeds!
