I live in a place where there are almost always clouds, rain, fog or all all of the above in winter and I am going to build a yurt. In terms of its placement, I thought of putting it where it would get maximum winter sun but then I thought it might be better to place it where it would get more shade since I have been in yurts that get pretty hot in the summer, I could always heat it with a rocket stove maybe?

Yeah wind protection is a consideration too. Generally, Passive solar is done in a way that prevents overheating in the summer through the use of properly sized overhangs. I would prefer a sunnier, brighter spot but I dont know how hot it gets there either. Building it airtight is probably most important.
