Mushroom ID

Hi All, i'm new to this so please be gentle

I found these mushrooms in my garden near a pile of wood chips that i am trying to compost. There were just so many i couldn't resist so i picked a bucket full i hope they are edible i think they are field mushrooms but need some help to id

The younger ones are button shaped with pink gills, the larger ones are white on top some are turning brown about 15cm in diameter dark brown gills they have a circular ring about an inch down the stalk the stalk is about 2cm in diameter and about 15-20cm in length

Those are in the Agaricus genus, a complex group that contains both toxic and edible species. Beginners will usually need direct help from an expert to figure out which species they have. Do the mushrooms stain yellow, especially at the base of the stem? Do they have an unpleasant metallic or pastey kind of smell? If the answer is yes to both of these questions, you probably have a member of the "lose-your-lunch" bunch, several species of Agaricus which are toxic and cause vomiting and stomach problems. It doesn't stain yellow they smell almost like ordinary button mushrooms... do you know of some begginer species to try to find/grow?

Where exactly do you live? If I knew what state or country or province you live in, it would be easier to help you ID your mushrooms to species and to offer advice on good ones for you to hunt or to grow.
For example, if you live in Oregon, you could attend the Mount Pisgah Mushroom Festival on this upcoming Sunday, Oct. 28th, in Eugene. They could help you identify mushrooms and teach you how to grow them. Other mushroom festivals are happening in California in the months of November and December.

Monty, I'm afraid I don't know about the mushrooms of your area to ID them down to the exact species by online photos. Agaricus is such a complex group, that sometimes even mycologists have trouble sorting the various species out. But they certainly are in the genus Agaricus.
My advice to beginers is "When in doubt, throw it out."
