I haven't had to plant a single tomatillo for several years now. When the fruit rots and their husks dry out, they roll around like miniature tumbleweeds, dropping their seeds every where. I usually just dig them up and move them where I want them since a single plant can easily take over a 4x4 bed by the end of summer, effectively shading out all other plants.
This year was pretty disappointing though because of the weather. None sprouted until mid summer and it didn't look like I'd get any fruit. If we have a late frost, I will get a few ripe ones. But...
Look at what my kids noticed a few days ago growing in our gravel road! These plants sprouted with months of ZERO rain. In hard packed gravel. Somehow surviving all the cars that drive down the road. They even have tiny fruit on them. We just had our first rain in months so we will watch to see just how big they might get before our first frost coming up.
I love the persistence of plants!
