I am in the process of building some
hugel beds, however I have limited amounts of woody material on-site. I have found a lot of
wood available on craigslist for free and have brought several trailer loads home, but have come across an individual that has a lot of really large stump pieces, but they are actually freshly cut and quite intact.
So my question is, "will logs that are 2-3 foot in diameter and 3-4 feet in length be okay in a hugel bed?
My concern is that there will be limited channels/fissures in these logs and because they are quite fresh, they will not absorb much additional
water.
I would prefer to not try and split these or do any additional work to them, but if they are too big to work as they are, I am open to ideas.
The good news is that the beds will probably not break down and settle too much
Thanks for any input.
