Not being a fan of treated posts, I have run into an issue, with posts rotting off at ground level...eventually and inevitably. Being a person of limited $ resources but unlimited imagination I got to brain-storming. One natural resource that I am blessed with is rocks...lots of rocks due to past repeated glaciation there are rivers of rocks, all sizes. I have cursed them when digging trenches and now I have learned to love them. I happened to have some partial rolls of welded
concrete reinforcement wire, heavy with 6"x6" squares and some left over 2"x3" wire from fencing in the
chicken pastures. I formulated a re-do for the rotten post that required no post replacement, no digging and I think it looks awesome...in perhaps an artistic/old world sort of way. I made Gabion Baskets that incorporate posts in a
fence line or a gate. Note the heavy wire is on the outside, lite wire inside to hold smaller rocks. The cut ends of the "gabion" wire lace through
fence wires and are bent/twisted together. Add rocks!
