My cabbage is about softball size and outter leaves are starting to show rust. Is this the sign to pick?

I am not sure what "starting to show rust" means.

If that is something fungal this thread might help:

non-toxic-Fungicide

We usually harvest our cabbage as we need them or when we feel they are large enough.  At the end of the garden we harvest any heads that are left.

Rust colored leaves on the outside that we typically pick off and toss away. Much like lettuce butter leaves.
