So I put 5 butternuts in pots to get sprout in spring, but 3 sprouted right away prior to cold scarification. Should I leave them out exposed to my zone 8 winter? Put them in the unheated greenhouse? Or maybe even move them into the storage room where it will stay above 55 F and has a large plant light set up?

I’m not sure if they will get killed by the cold since they sprouted out of season.

I recommend ignoring them, and starting over in the spring.

I have had a similar experience with horse chestnut seedlings I was goofing off with learning about cold stratification.

I ended up potting them and putting them under a grow light with good success!

However, when I put them outside in the spring the chipmunks got them

Hmmm… if I start over, I have to buy another seed packet of butternuts, so I’ll stick them in the greenhouse for the winter and when I plant them, give them an anti-squirrel cage and hope for the best. And if that doesn’t succeed, start over.

Thank you all!
