Has anyone made tincture out of wild ginger for the scent? Is the process for scent preservation different than doing it for medicinal use?

This summer I figured out that the scent I loved from Aveda products is actually just the scent of wild ginger.

I have some preservative allergies and can't use their shampoo with the scent. ( even if I was willing to pay the prices they charge)

I was able to move several pieces of my plants and I hope they will take on our new property. If they do, I would like to make myself some perfume! Can I just go ahead and make myself a tincture and use it for perfume?

It's not the same. You'd need to distill it, to draw out the essential oils, and since there is so much water in ginger, there is little of the essential oil. That means it takes a LOT of ginger to make even a tiny bit of essential oil, and that type would come from the plant, not the rhizome, if my memory serves me, correctly.

Oh! But, what you might be able to do (that just popped into my head), is slice the ginger thinly, then dehydrate it. Once the water is removed, you can infuse it into a neutral oil, like sweet almond. The more ginger you use, the syringe it will be. You'd then strain & press all the solids, to get as much oil out as possible. It won't be as strong as the essential oil, but it will also be far less likely to burn your skin, and it would be shelf stable for as long as the oil doesn't go rancid.

I'm looking to get the scent of wild or Canadian ginger, not the regular eating stuff!

I know it had medicinal uses for First Nations, but there are some compounds in it that are potentially not great for eating. Since I just want the smell, I'm hoping I can get it captured, at least a little.

Strongly infused into the oil, is probably your best bet.

What's that smell? Hey, sniff this tiny ad:
