Hello everyone! The last time I had a yard was 1993, when I was in 6th grade. Since then it's just been small patio areas (at best). For the past five years I've only had a tiny balcony that gets almost no direct sun.
I'm now 32, and in June I'll be moving into my new home that has around 4000 sq ft of yard space (mostly the back yard, with a very small lawn and side area). I'm thrilled about the possibilities and am looking forward to having some interesting conversations here!
Welcome to permies Ronnie Yay for your own place to play with!
My property comes in at about 4000ft-ish; you can squeeze a huge amount in (and up and over)
Maybe when you've made yourself at home, you can post a thread with more details about your land.
If you haven't yet, I'd check out Geoff Lawton's stuff. While we don't have room for trees and cattle, let alone dams, the design info is really useful for anywhere.
And the urban video's coming soon...
Thank you Judith and Leila. I'll make sure to check out Geoff Lawton. I'm really looking forward to moving in! In the meantime, I'm coming up with a sort of "information gathering checklist" that I can run through once I'm there. So far I have stuff like:
- inventory of current plants
- evaluation of soil, including composition and drainage
- location of underground pipes, gas lines, etc.
- State, county and HOA codes and rules
I wonder if anyone has compiled a "what to do when you first move in" checklist. It would definitely be helpful!
All that thinking. Doesn't it hurt? What do you think about this tiny ad?
