I went on a short trip last week. Before I went I fed the dogs some ground burger from the local market, locally owned. I forgot and left some raw ground beef on the counter. Darn, I expected a counter of maggots and sky of happy fliers when I go back.

It has been a week and a half. Not one maggot or nothing. Some smell, but not much.

I got road kill in the back field the dogs like to drag around. Oh, lots of maggots and stink. Poor Mr. Possum. I hope he had a good life before walking into the light. Hmmmmm.

Meat that flies can not hatch on. At the two week point I will burn it in the trash. I feel trapped and a little scared. My health has been so bad. Since I stopped most meat and been wondering how I got there. I will be asking around.

The flies would have had to get into your house and then into the packaging in order to lay eggs on or near the meat...so if either of those barriers was fly-proof, there would be stink but no maggots, as you found. I would bet that if you unwrapped some similar meat and left it sitting outside, like the roadkill, you would have maggots just as quickly.
