who do I call if I want to pay to have it done!!

a plumber? heat and air company? the fact that i have to ask this question tells you why we aren't attempting this ourselves

What type of gas appliance? I would probably call the gas company to see who they suggest? Or call a company that sells/installs gas appliances and see who they suggest or see if they can repair them. Your county government might be able to steer you in the right direction because it may require special license/certification to work on gas appliance installations and the county might be able to tell you what to look for to find a qualified person.

Yes, there will be at least one guy in your area that covers installing and repair of gas appliances. One of my friends is this guy for our town, he actually works for a large gas company out of Denver, Co - they hire guys to work in rural areas.

We just called him The Gas Man

ha! i'm sure that gets him some jokes!

its our gas fireplace. the pilot light won't stay on. and it makes me skeered

the electric heat is parching me and I would really like to use the fireplace a bit.

so there are specific plumbers for gas and there might be a specific person in the area/town to use. thanks everyone! I will call the gas company and see who they direct me to.

Dh says it's probably the thermo-couple that has gone out. Say's it's a very common thing and may be able to just be unscrewed and replaced. It's a very common item/repair. Says a reputable heat & air service company should be able to handle that. Perhaps your dh could ask co-workers who they've used for heat & air service and get some numbers for you to call. I'd think the gas company would also have people they could refer you to.

would the thermo coupler be the doohicky that would stay open when it stays hot (as in sensing that the pilot is lit) ? we were figuring it was something like that, or the outlet for the gas was corroded or possibly there was some kind of oxygen sensor that was either malfunctioning or detecting a problem with the ventilation........

I think I am going to drown myself in safflower oil and vitamin E. I have been resorting to every old cream and lotion I can find laying around. I feel like jerky.

Gas repair (at least in Alabama) requires a special state license -- its not something an ordinary plumber can do. You should be able to contact one through your gas company.

Good luck though. The guy that came to fix my heater last winter in January just disconnected it and left. He said I needed to find a local qualified service person. I still haven't found someone to repair it.

I don't understand in our economy why so many people are out of work, but when you need an essential repair there is no one to do it.

Appliance repair, many work on gas appliances,
I would call and see what they do, yes there is a a fair amount of cross over, when it comes to appliances and heating and gas appliances,
I would just start calling and possibly start with your gas supplier, and if I would call a plumber ask before having him come, yes he may change out thermo couples in a hot water heater and an occasional valve but his main job would most likely be certified in the running of the gas piping, not the repair of the appliance,
