I use to commute on my mountain bike (6 miles from home to my workplace) but a month ago, my brother and me bought two Yedoo brand kick scooters, we choose the model OX wich is fairly light and compact, with 16" tires.
It's a lot of fun to ride, and it reaches all places of our city (Granada City in south Spain) it's a medium city, population 300.000 and about 5 miles from side to side.
We've found this kick scooter is great for personal transportation within the limits of our city size.
Here'a a video we made this morning doing some errands downtown. Enjoy!

That is the standard for Amish kids that don't have a pony.

My son used his little razor scooter to move feed around all the time. He would put more weight on it than he possibly could lift and push it where it needed to go. A six year old figuring out how to move 200 lbs of feed at a time warms a father's heart. Keeping the load a few inches off the ground makes them remarkably stable.

They have a definite place in a a permie life.
