Bootstraps and Biscuits is a book that IMO would be of interest to all the readers of this forum. Full of recipes for using wildcrafted foods like nettles, sunchokes, persimmons, as well as all sorts of wild game.
Written by a woman forced by hardship to return to her roots and take up the foraging lifestyle of her depression era youth. She summed up her philosophy as "If life gives you wild grapes, then make jelly".
Anna Lee lived across the hollow from me and I considered her a friend. She taught me to dress a snapping turtle before the book came out. Awhile after she published in 1997, I wrote a review of sorts for Backwoodsman magazine. I recall her telling me that many of these recipes were in her head and had never been written down before. Anna Lee was the real deal, living this lifestyle and not just writing about it. She kept goats and chickens for milk and eggs, foraged and transplanted many native plants to her gardens. She did most of her cooking and all of her baking with a wood cookstove. Her independant spirit forced her to be homesteader and she was a permaculturist before the term was coined.
She's gone now. This work and another "VA/ WV Shuttlesworth Search" is all that remains, but our memories.
