Sam , tell me more. Did John just send you all a book for the labs library?
Might be that others would send some books ,if we know what you had or didn't have.
I go to second hand book stores all the time . Could pick up some for cheap and send them up there.

Love it!

You might want to post a mailing address, so other people can send you cool stuff. I think you have a p.o. box??

Glad you like the plaque Paul! The wood came from a Deodar Cedar tree which was removed from a backyard on one of my landscaping projects in NE Portland. Deodar Cedar is native to India and means tree of the gods in Hindi. It is very fragrant and rot resistant as well. There are a lot them planted in Portland and they can grow to 8' in diameter in 100 years! This would have certainly been turned into firewood had I not saved it and had it milled. My next door neighbor Rob with Bullfrog Graphics was kind enough to do the laser engraving.

I have to confess that I am a really terrible person. My lovely, sweet aunt Donna Lee (who raised me from age 16 to 18) tried so hard to teach me to send thank you letters, but there is something seriously broken in my wiring. So I don't. Ever. I very much wish to please my aunt, but somehow there is something wrong with me.

I've put a lot of thought into this. And there are several things where I am broken - stuff where I wish I was not this way, but I am. And I think about "improving myself", but my aversion to this is larger than my aversion that I am trying to mend. By an order of magnitude.

Several times in my life I was miserable. And I realized that my misery was rooted in a feeble attempt to change my behavior to please somebody. The cure was simple: stop that. As long as I live my life by my standards, my life seems to be generally fucking awesome. So I have come to embrace my broken-ness. Being broken in certain ways appears to give me super powers in other ways.

In time I stopped getting gifts for any occasion, and the cards for birthdays and christmas stopped.

Frankly, I never really cared for calendar based gifts. And the concept of cards was always something that seemed like the result of a great deal of advertising by the card industry. However, when I encountered something cool, I remember buying dozens to give to friends and relatives. I suppose it was that sort of thinking that led to me giving away millions of copies of BananaCom and all sorts of other public domain stuff, then freeware stuff, then articles and videos and .... whatever else.

So people give me amazing gifts and I am broken in the space of saying "thanks". But maybe I am trying to compensate in my own way.

(if i got a lot of christmas cards this christmas, then maybe i won't look weird at christmas time when jocelyn gets so many. maybe i'll remember to ask about that when christmas rolls around)

Hey Paul, thank you for the weird segue. I can relate, both on the specific issue (birthdays and thank-you notes) and the general issue (being incredibly bad at something most people find basic). I learned to ask people to just forgive my ineptitude in that specific area, since trying to change it felt so incredibly unnatural.

Thanks for posting the address here (just in case there's a person with a thing they think you should have, and they don't get the dailyish email.) (Although everyone should get the dailyish email.)

I have the same problem with thank you notes. I don't know what the problem is. It just doesn't seem to rise to the level of "a thing I need to do right NOW" and thus it never gets done, what with the massive to-do list. Thanks for reminding me, though - both my girls need to thank their great aunt for birthday gifts. Their birthdays are in July. In August we got a second hand question about whether we got the gifts. Now it is September. Sigh.

Jessica Peterson stopped by earlier this month, and look at the amazing goodies she left for us!

Check out her massage services in Helena, MT, or her herbal / apothecary CSA. She also does permaculture and regen ag instruction and humanely raises chickens and meat rabbits among other things. Such. good. stuff.

Thank you Jesse!!

(Oh, and see our other thank you threads:

--gapper love thread - this is for awesome things sent to gappers and boots here at wheaton labs
--ant love - the gratitude thread for all of the ant village support
--Biological Reverse Kickstarter - a way to support content (posts, pictures and videos!) from wheaton labs residents

--A thread to say thank you - though this is more about permies and permies.com staff
--Thread of big fat giant thank yous - which I'm going to treat more as empire thanks.)

Thank you so much, Kerry! The Noma Guide to Fermentation arrived!

I'm going to start making lacto-fermented tomato water, since we have tomatoes that need something to be done with them!
