Located in Lake Victoria, Rusinga Island has seen land degradation and increased illnesses due to chemical fertilizers. Permaculture Research Institute (PRI)-Kenya is working with the 35,000 residents to bring their island back into the lush productivity through the use of holistic permaculture techniques.
You can help them reach their very modest goal of $15,000 by visiting their Indiegogo campaign and making a contribution.
What will the money be used for?
1.Offer workshops in permaculture, group development, organic certification and market access;2.Create a farmer-/community- lead strategy to address uncontrolled grazing;
3.Offer one-on-one farmer support through farm visits by one of our permaculture trainers to help them develop their farm into a model farm; and
4.Support each farm with rainwater harvesting systems and agriculture tools.
Julie’s Story
Julie is a member of RIOFA. In the last seven months since her training commenced, Julie has implemented a kitchen garden that is a testament to what can be achieved with permaculture methods.
Julie’s husband died in 2002, leaving her with a shell of a house. With no money or support from her family, Julie was unable to finish constructing her house. To this day her house has no roof or windows. She has only managed to cover one room with some odd bits of tin roof weighed down by some stones, within which currently lives and cooks.
We would like to dedicate extra funds raised above our target to a fund a roof and some windows for Julie’s house. With a roof over her head, we would significantly uplift her living standard AND provide Julie with a source of rental income by hiring her extra rooms as accommodation for trainers and volunteers working on projects in the area.
