hi, i just joined but i have to report that upon registering for the daily email i was affronted by advertisements for scotts miracle grow as well as roundup. thought you might want to know...
The site is financed by these adds. I read somewhere that they have to pay a little each time the add is hit. If I'm leaving the computer for some reason, I'll often click on an add for poison.
Does anyone know for sure if I'm tossing a dime Paul's way by doing this ? If so, I will make a point of it and spread the word. I'm devious by nature. I value my own dimes and I think theirs are best donated to the cause.
Tim, welcome to permies. The next time you see that ad in question, can you take a screenshot of it and post that image here? I'm not really sure which ad we are talking about.
Those ads in the Google banner do rotate. I often get ones from my geographical area.
Google is often selective which ads they show. And they can be selective.
A viewer in Atlanta will get a different ad than somebody in Seattle.
Another thought - Which browser are you using? If it is Chrome, then you are 'theirs'.
Google has admitted publicly that they are 'scanning' gmail accounts, looking for 'keywords'.
They then use those 'keywords' to target which ads they will display for you.
Makes me feel "special". They selected an ad just for me.
I've noticed that the ads often relate to the subject of the thread. If ten people mention drainage tile, I get an ad for Bob's Ditching and Drainage. I've mentioned herbicides many times, never in a positive way, but the search engines don't make that judgment. I say " those bastards at DuPont" and the computer tries to sell me some Teflon.
A day job? In an office? My worst nightmare! Comfort me tiny ad!
