Licorice

I was surprised to come up with zero posts when I did a search for threads including licorice or liquorice. I read this blog post yesterday that made it sound like a great permaculture plant! Does anyone here have any experience with it?

I've used licorice root medically in teas and it does have a sweet flavor. I'd have to grow American Licorice here in my zone. I just need to give some thought to where to plant it!

I have some in my hugel, but it's too young to harvest yet. I don't think we have anywhere near as cold of winters as you, but I can say we had a terrible ice storm at the end of winter and it managed to come out of the ground this spring. It doesn't grow terribly fast here, it would probably have been crowded out if I hadn't given it adequate space. I haven't given it any special attention to get it to grow. While it doesn't grow fast, it doesn't appear unhealthy.

I wish I had more info for you, but I'm relatively new the growing in general, and licorice specifically.

I've been growing it for about ten years, I plant it between a lot of other perennials and some roses - it springs up in the most unexpected places.
