So I found this guy walking in my woods and I've never seen it before - any ideas what it is?

Hard to tell from that photo, I'd need to turn it over and examine it. A good place to start identifying it is the key at mushroomexpert.com.

John has some excellent advice, as mushroomexpert.com is one of the best websites for mushroom ID. However, I'd like to take a stab at it, too. I think it's most likely some type of false truffle. Michael, could you slice it in half so we get a better look at the insides? Also. does it have a particular smell? What kind of tree did you find it under?
