I was forking this earth to unearth a burdock root, and was about to plant some nettles there. I had made the garden bed a while ago as a mini hugel but not too densely woody.

There is so much life—fungus? Burdock root hairs? I am not sure what, but this dirt is certainly being transformed. Last year, it had been all shaded by a big burdock plant.

Excellent! My guess is mycellium. I'm not sure there is an easy way to tell - do you have a microscope?

(edit - lost a few letters in microscope!)
