Contemplating Alternative Sealant Methods

I understand "gleying" can be used to seal ponds, and to get the discussion off on the right foot, Paul and Mid Wales Permaculture wrote articles explaining what gleying is.

What are everyone's thoughts about using a gleying-like technique to replace wofati liners and to protect other structures from water damage?

I, for one, find them very positive. Yet I also believe this is a very well known and understood traditional method that just fell out of favor and use because of the IR (industrial revolution) and all it brought us. This practice is both germane and useful, as are the "tiling methods," with both clay tile, stone, paper, board, carpet padding, and anything else that can either be "shingled" and or contribute to sealing in some capacities. All have great promise when well planned for and design into a system of application.
