Elephant Garlic Corms

I've bought about 50 of these to start a perennial bed with.
I expect it will take years before they are in the perennial stage, that's not what worries me.
These the small hard cloves that grow around the roots of elephant garlic.

I've read they need to be peeled for them to sprout, but the farmer I bought them from doesn't seem to do that.
I've also reports where peeling them has not helped them., they still don't sprout.

Does anyone here have any firsthand experience with these corms?

I've planted them without peeling and they did come up, just took a long time. Think I waited almost two seasons before the first ones showed. Not sure if peeling actually speeds it up or if it's one of those things people swear by without much evidence behind it.
