Well, many people here are talking about having hundreds, or even thousands, of acres, most of which are wooded. However, the amount of land you’d actually need to have a homestead that provides only the food for one family is certainly less than 50 acres. It’s less than 20. Depending on the size of the family, it’s between 5 and 15. The ideal size for me and what I want to do (a milk cow, chickens, garden, pigs, a few fruit trees and 2 acres or less of wooded land) would probably be around 7 acres. So I think the ideal size for a homestead (not a bunch of wild land; that is NOT a homestead) is about 10 acres.
