Difference between food grade diatomaceous earth and not?

...so what is the difference?
If, say, I purchased a 50 lb. bag of DE and my chickens, pigs, horse, and goats are all getting doses mixed in their food, which they are, should I not be eating this stuff, as well,? (The extra comma was to point out my absurd sentence structure)....I bought DE from a feed store. Do I assume this is food grade, or do I need to be buying a different DE for my human-ness?

Non-food grade DE is what is used in pool filters I believe. Yes, if you buy the DE at the feed store you can safely assume it is food grade DE and, SFAIK, there is no difference between the DE sold for livestock and the DE sold for human consumption.

I agree with Tina that a feed store DE should be food grade. BUT we do have a 50 lb bag of DE that we bought for our family to use from a local feed store that does not have "food grade" anywhere on it. From our volumes of research, we ran a few things and traced it back to a DE mine in Nevada. It probably was food grade, but it is really not worth the chance. It would have cost them less than 1 penny to put "food grade" on their label. Why didn't they?? Not worth the risk for my family so it is animal only DE for us.

Just make sure it has "food grade" clearly marked on the packaging. There is a lot of DE in feed stores that is marked "food grade" so I recommend you try several different kinds.
