I'm taking Andrew Millison's Online Advanced PDC through Oregon State University currently. We have to take on a large scale project and so I took on my neighborhood here in Phoenix. Many of the aspects of my project involve social interactions, permaculture education and familiarizing people with various permaculture concepts in a goofy way.

Sooooo.....I've bastardized old and newish songs so they are now about various aspects of Water Harvesting. One of more of these songs may be used during "Water Month" here in AZ, which is in April.

My first drafts are below. I would love your input. Also - if any of you are prone to goofiness (and I know some of you are), please feel free to post your own songs with the caveat that they could be used by Watershed Management Group for Arizona Water Month.

Many thanks.

Coconut /Compost Pile
by Harry Nilsson
Sing along here:

My lyrics are in RED

Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
Brother built a compost pile, he built it in no time
His sister had another one, she paid it for a lime
His sister built another one, she built it in springtime
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the dead leaves in the compost pile, she mixed it all up
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the cardboard in the compost pile, she mixed it all up
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the branches in the compost pile, she mixed it all up

She put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up
She put this brown stuff in the compost pile, she called her brother, woke him up
And said, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take
And said, Brother, ain’t there nothin’ I can do
I say, doctor, to relieve this bellyache?
I say brother, cause I haven’t got a clue?
I say, doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take
I say brother, ain’t there nothing I can add?
I say, doctor, to relieve this bellyache?
I say brother, cuz my compost’s lookin’ sad.

Now let me get this straight
Now let me get this straight
You put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
You put the dead leaves in the compost pile, you mixed it all up
You put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
You put the cardboard in the compost pile, you mixed it all up
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up
Put the branches in the compost pile, mixed it all up

Put the lime in the coconut, you called your doctor, woke him up
Put the brown stuff in the compost pile, you called your brother, woke him up
And said, Doctor, ain't there nothing I can take
And said, Brother, ain’t there nothin’ I can do
I said, Doctor, to relieve this bellyache?
I say brother, cause I haven’t got a clue?
I said, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take
I say brother, ain’t there nothing I can add?
I said, Doctor, to relieve this bellyache?
I say brother, cuz my compost’s lookin’ sad.

You put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both together
Add kitchen scraps and yard trimmings, you mix ‘em both together
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better
You put some green stuff in the brown stuff, then it works better
Put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em both up
You put some green stuff in the compost pile, mix ‘em both up
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning
Put the green stuff in the compost pile and call me in the morning

Whoo-whoo-whoo, whoo-ooh-ooh, whoo-ooh-ooh (Same)
Whoo-whoo-whoo, whoo-ooh-ooh, whoo-ooh-ooh
Whoo-whoo-whoo, whoo-ooh-ooh, whoo-ooh-ooh
Whoo-whoo-whoo, whoo-ooh-ooh, whoo-ooh-ooh

Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
Brother built a compost pile, he built it in no time
His sister had another one, she paid it for a lime
His Sister built another one, she built it in springtime
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank them both up
She put the browns and greens together and she mixed it all up

And put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up
She put the browns and greens together then she called her brother, woke him up
Said, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take
She said, Brother, ain’t there nothin’ you propose?
I said, Doctor, to relieve this bellyache?
I said, Brother, cuz my pile won’t decompose?
I said, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take?
I said, Brother, help your sister with her woes?
I said, Doctor
I said, Brother

Now let me get this straight
Now let me get this straight
You put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both up
You put the browns and greens together, then you mixed them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both up
You put the browns and greens together, then you mixed them both up
Put a lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both up
You put the browns and greens together, then you mixed them both up

Put the lime in the coconut, you such a silly woman
Put some water on the compost pile, you such a silly woman
Put a lime in the coconut and drink 'em both together
Put some water on the compost pile, mix it all together
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better
Put some water on the compost pile, then it looks better
Put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em both down
Put some water on the compost pile, mix it all together
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning
Put some water on the compost pile and call me in the morning

Whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo, ain't there nothin' you can take
Whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo, usin’ waste to make some soil
I say, whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo, to relieve your bellyache
I say, whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo, and it doesn’t take much toil
You say, well, whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo, ain't there nothing I can take
You say, well, whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo, usin’ waste to make some soil
I say, whoo-whoo, to relieve your bellyache
I say, whoo-whoo, and it doesn’t take much toil
You say, yeah, ain't there nothin' I can take
You say, yeah, usin’ waste to make some soil
I say, waah waah, to relieve this bellyache
I say, waah waah, and it doesn’t take much toil

I say, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take?
I say, Brother, compost’s so much fun to make!
I say, Doctor, ain't there nothing I can take?
I say, Brother, compost’s so much fun to make!
I say, Doctor, ain't there nothing I can take?
I say, Brother, compost’s so much fun to make!
I say, Doctor
I say, Brother

You're such a silly woman
You're such a silly woman
Put the lime in the coconut and drink them both together
Put the green stuff in the brown stuff and mix them both together
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better
Put the water in the compost pile, then it looks better
Put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em both up
Put the green stuff in the brown stuff and mix them both up
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the mo-o-o-o-orning
Put the water on the compost pile and call me in the mo-o-o-o-orning

Yes, you call me in the morning (Same)
If you call me in the morning, I'll tell you what to do
If you call me in the morning, I'll tell you what to do
If you call me in the morning, I'll tell you what to do
If you call me in the morning, I'll tell you what to do
Well, if you call me in the morning, I'll tell you what to do

Working In The Coal Mine/Diggin’ Up Some Earthworks
by Lee Dorsey

Sing along here:

Workin' in a coal mine, goin' down, down, down
Diggin’ up some earthworks diggin’ down, down, down
Workin' in a coal mine, whoop, about to slip down
Diggin’ up some earthworks, whoop, about to slip down
Workin' in a coal mine, goin' down, down, down
Harvestin’ some rainwater, slow and spread the stream, stream
Workin' in a coal mine, whoop, about to slip down
Diggin’ up some earthworks, makin’ Phoenix greee-een

Five o'clock in the mornin', I'm already up and gone
Eight o’clock in the mornin’, I’m already up and gone
Lord I am so tired, how long can this go on?
Four more basins to dig, Lord, how long can this go on?

Workin' in a coal mine, goin' down, down, down
Diggin’ up some earthworks diggin’ down, down, down
Workin' in a coal mine, whoop, about to slip down
Diggin’ up some earthworks, whoop, about to slip down
Workin' in a coal mine, goin' down, down, down
Harvestin’ some rainwater, slow and spread the stream, stream
Workin' in a coal mine, whoop, about to slip down
Diggin’ up some earthworks, makin’ Phoenix greee-een

'Cause I make all the money, hauling coal by the ton
‘Cause we need all that water, growin’ trees for some shade
But when Saturday goes around I'm too tired for havin' fun
So when Saturday rolls around, more basins I’ll have made!

I’m just workin' in a coal mine, goin' down, down, down
I’m just diggin’ up some earthworks diggin’ down, down, down
Workin' in a coal mine, whoop, about to slip down
Diggin’ up some earthworks, whoop, about to slip down
Workin' in a coal mine, goin' down, down, down
Harvestin’ some rainwater, slow and spread the stream, stream
Workin' in a coal mine, whoop, about to slip down
Diggin’ up some earthworks, makin’ Phoenix greee-een

Lord I am so tired, how long can this go on?
Lord I am so tired, how long can this go on?

That I’m workin' in a coal mine, goin' down, down, down
That I’m diggin’ up some earthworks diggin’ down, down, down
Workin' in a coal mine, whoop, about to slip down
Diggin’ up some earthworks, whoop, about to slip down

I'm A Believer/Shade – I’m a Believer
from More of the Monkees

Sing along here: (Remember - we're talkin' about Phoenix, Arizona here. 4 months of 100-120 degree temps)

I thought love was only true in fairytales
I thought shade was only true in fairytales
Meant for someone else but not for me
Meant for someone else but not for me
Love was out to get me
The sun was out to get me
That's the way it seemed
That's the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Triple digits haunted all my dreams

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Then I dug a basin, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
Captured rain, and planted a tree
I'm in love, I'm a believer
Growin’ shade, I’m a believer
I couldn't leave her if I tried
I couldn’t leave here if I tried

I thought love was more or less a givin' thing
I thought rain was more or less a wasted thing
But the more I gave the less I got
We only get eight inches after all
What's the use in trying?
What’s the use in trying?
All you get is pain
It’s not worth the pain
When I needed sunshine I got rain
A whole lot of diggin’ for no gain

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Then I dug a basin, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
Captured rain, and planted a tree
I'm in love, I'm a believer
Growin’ shade, I’m a believer
I couldn't leave her if I tried
I couldn’t leave here if I tried

Love was out to get me
The sun was out to get me
That's the way it seemed
That's the way it seemed

Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Triple digits haunted all my dreams

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Then I dug a basin, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
Captured rain, and planted a tree
I'm in love, I'm a believer
Growin’ shade, I’m a believer
I couldn't leave her if I tried
I couldn’t leave here if I tried

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Then I dug a basin, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
Captured rain, and planted a tree
Said I'm a believer, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Said I'm a believer, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(I'm a believer)
(I'm a believer)
Said I'm a believer, yeah
Said I'm a believer, yeah
(I'm a believer)
(I'm a believer)
Said I'm a believer, yeah
Said I'm a believer, yeah
(I'm a believer)
(I'm a believer)

Finally, my Magnum Opus! A celebration of the homemade composting toilet!

Your Body is a Wonderland/ Your Potty is a Wonderland
by John Mayer

Sing along here:

We got the afternoon
We got the afternoon
You got this room for two
You got this room for poo
One thing I've left to do
One thing I’ve left to do
Discover me
Discover me
Discovering you
Discovering poo

One mile to every inch of
A style for everyone
Your skin like porcelain
The bowl’s not porcelain
One pair of candy lips and
One plastic urine diverter
Your bubblegum tongue
And a nice blue barrel

And if you want love
And if you want soil
We'll make it
We’ll make it
Swim in a deep sea
Pee in a thick stream
Of blankets
Dilute it
Take all your big plans
Take all the night soil
And break 'em
Convert it
This is bound to be a while
This is composting in style

Your body is a wonderland
Your potty is a wonderland
Your body is a wonder (I'll use my hands)
Your potty is a wonder (I’ll feed my land)
Your body is a wonderland
Your potty is a wonderland

Something 'bout the way the hair falls in your face
Something ‘bout the way the trees grow ‘round this place
I love the shape you take when crawling towards the pillowcase
I love the shade they cast while squatting here, within this space
You tell me where to go and though I might leave to find it
My poop and pee diverted, my garden lush ‘n’ fertile
I'll never let your head, hit the bed, without my hand behind it
I’ll never let my poo, hit the loo, without a barrel below it

And if you want love
And if you want soil
We'll make it
We’ll make it
Swim in a deep sea
Pee in a thick stream
Of blankets
Dilute it
Take all your big plans
Take all the night soil
And break 'em
Convert it
This is bound to be a while
This is composting in style

Your body is a wonderland
Your potty is a wonderland
Your body is a wonder (I'll use my hands)
Your potty is a wonder (I’ll feed my land)
Your body is a wonderland
Your potty is a wonderland
(I'll never speak again... I'll use my hands)
(I’ll never flush again…I washed my hands!)

Damn baby
Damn baby
You frustrate me
You fascinate me
I know you're mine, all mine, all mine
I know you're mine, all mine, all mine
But you look so good it hurts sometimes
But you’re so fertile, it’s so sublime

Your body is a wonderland
Your potty is a wonderland
(I'll never speak again... I'll use my hands)
(I’ll never flush again…I’ll feed my land)
(I'll never speak again... I'll use my hands)
(I’ll never flush again…I washed my hands)
Your body is a wonderland
Your potty is a wonderland
(I'll never speak again... I'll use my hands)
(I’ll never flush again…I’ll feed my land)
Your body is a wonderland
Your potty is a wonderland

Da da DA, da da
Take a dump, take a dump
Da da DA, da da
Take a dump, take a dump
Da da DA, da da
Take a dump, take a dump
Da da DA, da da
Take a dump, take a dump

Hahahah! I almost soiled myself laughing at "Your potty is a wonderland"

Glad you swapped out "use my hands" for "feed my land"
