Anyone have thoughts about making a good drive-way without concrete and thousands of dollars in gravel?

I'm thinking: remove the topsoil and trench a drain down the entire center sloping to daylight. Fill the drain with gravel/rubble. Have a good mix of sand/clay and maybe add some crushed limestone. Till everything together and pack really well. And slope everything slightly to the center so any water can drain away.

Hi Philip,

Excuse me first, we all have baggage and I haven't gotten my cup of tea yet this morning...

I love that folks think about things...but....don't "re-invent the wheel." We still have not improved on what the Chinese and Romans did for roads 5000 years ago as these are still in use and/or under new roads that now behave better than other sections of road way just because the old road bed did not get torn up...

Road construction is well documented with means, methods and materials. I would visit and study this then look at your given location, topography and soil types. Learn about angle of repose, properdainage, and other factors. Geotextiles, though a modern augmentation, can allow the owner builder a less labor intensive method to a faster (not better) built road.

Your design may, or may not work, depending in soil types, rainfall for location, and how well the drainage is designed and installed. As to the question, "Packed earth as a driveway/road?" I must still be a bit groggy from sleep and lack of tea...but this describes about 90 % of the roads still used in the world today...

Regards,

j

you may have a listen to the podcasts about making/maintaining roads that Paul and Neil Bertrando did, i would say its a pretty good primer.

Thanks for the reply J. I am finding that many of my ideas have already been in practice for a very long time. There is so much to learn.
