It's feral turkeys that rampage my gardens from time to time. They eat the tops off the onions, carrots, chard, and such. Plus every strawberry that's shows the least tinge of pink. They are also expert at plucking the peas right out of the sides of the pods. At least they pay for their pillaging by eating every slug that they can find.
Cardinals will eat my tomatoes as soon as they show red.
It's never too late to start! I retired to homestead on the slopes of Mauna Loa, an active volcano. I relate snippets of my endeavor on my blog : www.kaufarmer.blogspot.com
