OUR STORY...
Hi! We’re Kim and Carol, and we live 35 miles northwest of Spokane. Kim is a very active senior, formerly from Juneau, Alaska. He runs 5 miles a day, and works hard on our 20-acre property. He loves hiking, camping, and mountain climbing, and is an excellent birdwatcher. And he can tell you some great Alaska backwoods survival stories! Carol loves
Jack Spirko and the Survival Podcast (
TSP), permaculture
gardening, reading, hiking, and is a beginning birdwatcher. We don’t play any instruments, but wouldn’t it be fun if some of you did?
A few winters ago we spent a few months in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, at an RV park with 700 spaces. It had everything-country dances with a live band every afternoon, a swimming pool, lots of dinners and occasions, etc. But Kim was bored-not his scene! What he didn’t like was eating non-organic food at the gatherings and not being active
enough. So we had an idea-what if we could start our own small community of like-minded folks to hang out with in Arizona?
So we searched, and luckily found the perfect place: Ray and his wife Sonia have 9 acres near Benson, AZ, about 45 miles SE of Tucson. They just bought the acreage in 2013, and are lovingly working to make it into the permaculture food forest they want to have. The land has several mesquite trees, and is near the famous San Pedro Riparian area, known for its wide variety of birds and other wildlife. It is also near Kartchner Caverns State Park, San Pedro Golf Course, Tombstone, and has a Super Walmart about 15 minutes away. Nogales, Mexico is about 72 miles to the south.
At this point there is a 20,000 square foot area on the property about 100 by 200 ft., with no RV hookups. It would be our job to supply the money and labor to set up the hookups. So each RV would pay $225 per month for their space, and Ray, the property owner, will use the money to buy materials for the RV hookups. Ray is a certified HVAC installer, so he has knowledge of electric and water systems. Probably the septic system would not be installed this year, but there is a nearby RV park that has a dump station for $5. We will get to use the hookups as they are completed, but the money for the materials will come from our space rents, so will take time, and we will be boondocking until then. There are no existing showers or rest rooms for us to use. Note that it can get chilly at night in Benson. In January the average high is 63 degrees and the average low is about 29, so you will need a good propane heater.
We plan to be there this winter 2-3 months, probably December or January through February, but you could certainly stay longer.
Only thing is, we need to let Ray know soon how many of us will be coming, or he will rent some spaces out to
local RVers. So if you’re feeling like this would be a great way to pass a few months this winter, fill out the contact information below, or just email the answers to the questions to me-come join the fun, and help Ray and Sonia !
