RMH thermal mass and drywall

How far should my thermal mass be away from drywall? At what point should I insulate between the all and the mass? I don't want a fire hazard!

I use 4" spacing between the mass (bench) and drywall, as per ASTM 1602-03 clearances for masonry heaters. You may find this document informative:
