Hot composting/dynamic

Hi all, I'm brand new to composting but I've been doing a bit of reading up on the subject and I've been hoarding materials to start making the compost.

These are the materials I have plenty of, and the ratios I intend to use-
1 part straw 80/1
1 part Leaves 60/1
2 part hops 20/1
1 part rotted manure 20/1
2 part coffee grounds 20/1
Total Carbon = 200 divide by 7= CN ratio of 28/1

My question is, does it look ok/have I worked it out correctly/ will it work fast, I intend to use ithe finnished product in four months.

The only thing I would say is that a lot of this is small particle size, so it will compact and go anaerobic easily, so turning this will be priority for a speedy finished product.

I was thinking twice every week. I have a compost thermometer to check temp. I know the temp got to be 140/160f but I don't know for how long you have to keep the temp up for?

I turn mine when it gets to 160 at first then 150 later, about every other day in good weather, look for signs that you took too long like unpleasant smells.

I'm in the UK and its the beginning of winter, just wondering how quick should I get the finnished product provided every thing is right.

Hi, I've had to take the straw out of the mix and replace with wood chip 1 to2 inches diameter (how long will these take to compost)?

The new Is as follows:

1 wood chip 400/1
1 Leaves 60/1
7hops 20/1
3rotted manure 20/1
5 coffee grounds 20/1
Total Carbon = 520 divide by 17 = CN ratio of 30/1

Does this look ok (will it work fast)?

Sorry I missed your wood chips idea....

Wood chips will take longer but add more long term structure and nutrients to your compost. I like a wood chip rich compost when I use compost, some do not, some of that is the intended use some is personal preference.

To me more wood is always better, in my soil or in my shop!

Cheers Chadwick, how long would this mix take till ready?

That has a big dose of it depends....heat moisture site and mixing all have variables in this. If you turn it very often and keep the nitrogen high enough to keep it working I would say 2 months is doable?.....but you get to have fun doing it too!

I've done a little experiment with one of them dalek type bins my first attempt at composting. I turned it after 3 days and to my suprise it was steaming like mad I cant tell you the temp because I forgot to take my thermometer. I could feel the heat from 3 feet away I was jumping for joy, it was a good job the allotments was empty I must have looked a right idiot.

Day five (today), I've been and turned it again but I took the thermometer this time and I can't believe it.
It reads 62c. One thing I notice was it had lots of white fungi on it, is this because it's lacking oxygen and needs turning more?

The mix was 1 part Guinea pig bedding/manure( hay straw) and two parts coffee grounds. It's turn brown already, at this rate I should imagine it's only gunna take a month to make.

They say the white ashy fungus is because it needs turned more, but mine have it no matter how much I turn it.....so.....

That sounds great, sounds like you are off!

Who would think compost would give that much sense of achievement.
