I'm looking for a good introduction to soils as they relate to horticulture, probably aimed at the educated amateur, rather than the expert, to get me from sort of beginner to intermediate.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Eco-Farm: an Acres USA Primer by Charles Walters. Combine that with Teeming with Microbes by Jeff Lowenfels, and you should have a better-than-decent grasp on what's goin on in your dirt.

Teaming with Microbes is one I can get hold of quite quickly. I'll need to ask my local librarian if the other one is in the national stacks. It's a US publication, so it may not even be there.

Still, they're used to me looking for obscure volumes.

I read "The Soil Will Save Us" over Christmas (Kristin Ohlson). I'd mentioned it as a possible gift, and my dear wife purchased it for me and stuffed it in the stocking. It was entertaining, but not what I thought it would be. Written for a popular audience with pop science sprinkled in here and there, it wasn't anything I hadn't read on the interwebs or on this forum. Very light on soil science. So I WOULDN'T recommend that book.
