plant with edible berries - Goumi, Elaeagnus multiflora

Does anyone know what this berry bush is called. It grows in a similar form to an azalea. In fact, I could see using it in any landscaping situation that calls for azaleas.

The fruit leaves a residue on the tongue. The taste is similar to autumn olives.

The berries turn red when they are ripe. I've found that they are much easier to locate if each branch is lifted up. It can look like there's nothing ready until the branch is lifted and the dangling fruit can easily be seen.

They are growing in a public food forest, which is why I ate some, without checking first.

Thank you madam. That's what they are. I had searched for goji berries and found a totally different plant.

I just read some stuff on it and it says that they are ready in Late July or August. We have had a really late season this year, and they're already ripening. There doesn't seem to be one bug bite on either the leaves or the fruit, so it looks like this one is a winner. Seems like a perfect addition to fruit leathers that might turn out too sweet. I could see mixing with pureed pears, so that we get sweet and sour, rather like myself.

I tried my first sea buckthorn, last week, and discovered Autumn olives a couple of years ago, at the same garden.

These Public Gardens are an awesome resource. Plenty to nibble on for the casual visitor, and educational, for those wanting to grow their own, showing good plant choices and how they are likely to perform.

I am now conducting a yield test, since looking for that on the internet proved fruitless. Check it out here.

A single bush occupying 60 square feet of space, has already yielded 5 750g yogurt containers of berries.
Obey! Obey this tiny ad!
