I am looking for other amateur apple tree growers to share scion wood with. Yes, I know its fall. But I thought I would set up an apple growing group for Zone 4, in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada. Or perhaps there is one already I don't know about? I have Jonagold, Royal Gala and Northern Spy.
If it survives in my garden, it was meant to live!
I don't have any named to share but this time of year I'm stopping to try the wild trees I see growing by the road. Most are nothing but I have found a real gem or two that way. I take cuttings from them.

Yes I'm trying to graft them but the mother tree is overgrown, doesn't produce the best shoots.
Its also in a bit of a hollow and gets hit by late spring freezes - common in this area due to the altitude in the Grey Highlands. This is the third year in a row I see no fruit.
I might try some pruning to encourage some shoot growth.
I did get a number of grafts to take. Tiny ones, barely bigger than a match.
A couple on an apple and a couple more on a hawthorn.
Donna, it is two years later from your post, but I want to cleft graft some old apple trees.
Do you have any scions for free or for sale? I ought to have my own but this winter I didn't see any that I thought would be a good thing to try.
Now it's spring and I am late starting. If you can help I'd appreciate the effort and repay you with scions or rhubarb tubers or garlic bulbs.
That doesn't sound very persuasive...how about some hard cider down the road or Concord wine?
