Perhaps once one knows just what microbes are producing the malacidins, one can try to encourage those microbes growth by providing their favored food and environment, and voila, homemade antibiotics that have the ability to fight MRSA, (and likely with a broad-spectrum ability to also take care of other potentially problematic bacteria)!
Although they are making a big song and dance this is nothing new :-) I WWII the Brits and the USA scoured the world looking for new strains of penicillin bacteria to improve production of this new wonder drug, soils , moldy bread and rotten fruit all over the world were tested.
