New Weather Station Installation

Wheaton Labs got a new Weather Station for Christmas! Time to install it.

Here's the rain gauge. It was put on a part of the porch well away from other things that might interfere with the rain collection.

Paul thought it would be whimsical to put the wind gauge on top of the "Seige Ladder"

It was installed by first sawing off part of the ladder to be somewhat level, then drilling a hole as plumb as possible. It was secured in place by a saskatoon branch peg after whittling down the pole and hole to allow the pole to stand plumb.

Only three hand tools were used.

That looks like a... bird bath!

Thanks Jeremy! We have other components, too, besides the rain and wind gauges Jeremy installed. We have an indoor temperature and humidity and an outdoor temperature and humidity and there is a fancy screen to show all the things, plus an app to connect them all. (Sounds like "one ring to rule them all" or something. Heh.)

I'll try to get more info up about the other components and some readings when I can.

Ha! I got the same one for Christmas (the best present of the year!) They are really cool! The wind direction and barometer are super neat features. I took the anemometer apart when it fell off it's post and looked at the workings. The windspeed and rain gauge look like simple arduino boards. I haven't taken the other stuff apart- yet!

I am concerned they will degrade in the sun up there, but the nifty factor has convinced me to try to make metal ones when they go kaput, using the same circuit boards in new housings. The price per month has kept me from using the data package they offer. Eventually I am going to get around to running a packet sniffer (Paul will know what I'm talking about) to decode the data transfer over Wifi and allow me to dump it into a usable format for my (nonexistent) website. I will try to snoop around online and see if someone has already done it, I bet they have...

EDIT- apparently not a new idea and a little more complicated than I thought. Here are some links. The last one is related to the arduino programming. Super cool.
Would anybody like some fudge? I made it an hour ago. And it goes well with a tiny ad ...
