I must have been in idiot mode when I passed through en route to the lab, cuz I told the pricks at the border the truth... described it as a workshop/volunteer learning thing and figured I'd be across for 3 weeks.
They did not seem to like this too much. I should have stuck to one syllable words.
Bearded 30-something in a camperized minibus full of tools... yup, I got to cool my heels in the secondary questioning lineup.
They let me through begrudgingly, after establishing that I had assets and family to return to. And breaking the zippers on my suitcase and leaving half my shit strewn around the bus. It would have been easier without the tools, and harder without things like a residential address and bank account balance to wave at them...
Canadian citizens can spend up to 182 days a year in the states. But... if they don't see any reason for you to leave again they may refuse to let you in. ...
Ya, guess they haven't heard about the free healthcare thing...
As I understand it you are totally free to change your mind about how long you are staying after you are in the country, up to that 182 day limit.
