WHY?
Successful farmers probably hold a PHD of knowledge in Animal Husbandry, Mechanics, Engineering, Economics, and Agronomics, all at the same time.
Yeah, it's a stereotype not just in children's TV, but across North American society. I find the attitude to tradespeople is similarly poor, though not as bad as for farmers.
My experience with farmers is that they have to be hard working and also knowledgeable in a vast number of areas. Unless you're in Dairy with supply management, you can't farm long if you aren't smart, handy, a vet and excellent at business. One of my friends from engineering school came from a long line of farmers. He used to say that, if you're not smart enough to farm, you can always be an engineer, doctor or lawyer.
