In case anyone is disappointed in the rate of spread of permaculture, I thought I'd solicit ideas to increase it.

Here are mine -

It is a 'corporate media' and the highest priority in that sphere is profit maximization - maybe we could focus on demonstrating, quantifying, highlighting, etc. PC's $$$$ maximization potential (and actuality?) to attract the interest of the mainstream media? PC's been around long enough to be able to generate the numbers. (or not?)... i.e. no-till expands when it reduces costs, and isn't it being generally adopted in Australia? ($$ talks..but not so much ethics, in this sphere - however, the soil doesn't care if it's getting richer ;)

And re: communication - I wish we had a 'sound bite' to hang the PC idea on for easier communication to the clueless.... preferably associated with an irresistible 'picture' of pc values and potential.

For an effective example- (politics aside) the 'estate tax' is renamed the 'death tax' and creates an unpleasant funereal 'picture'. And calling it the 'Paris Hilton tax' creates a 'fairness' 'picture/story'. It's the picture and the associated story that communicates initially, and sustains resonance.

So... what about PC? Maybe we could amp up the spread by 'framing' a dynamite generic soundbite and repeating it ad infinitum (works for politicos :) and talking $$

So...... ideas re: our soundbite? Ideas re: profit quantification? Crickets? :)

Personally and this is just me, I think our personal examples of how we apply permaculture in our own lives, especially with beautiful visuals, is more important than a sound bite. Sound bite with pictures, ye; sound bite without pictures, not so much.

I could not agree more! Be the change you wish to see in the world and let that example speak to others. I am new to this forum, live nearby Portland, OR and have quite recently been infected with the permaculture "virus" care of Paul. I am working to overhaul my way of life and plan to document my story along the way.

Here's an item on organic farming's profitability, and other superior aspects. Rodale did a 30 year study and quantified the results, etc. I consider this a step in the direction of demonstrating PC's superiority over agribiz, when dealing with the clueless, and planting seeds of curiosity and "'hmmm''..didn't know that." Natural is better .... and, of course, PC is the most natural of all :)

What else is out there? :) I saw a chart Paul used in presenting PC once, that made a comparison between practices (I think)...I wonder if that is available on the internet somewhere...?

Nancy, Great post. We gotta get it out of the meaningless drivel category. I wish we had an "advocacy" category for something like this here at permies. I don't quite see a clear profit model in permaculture, But I would like to imagine it. I could see cooperate media mentioning permaculture if there was this positive grass roots ground swell somewhere. Like a trend or the next big thing and then not have them talk about it again. But that would be cool. It would be like that John3:16 guy in the superbowl. Accept our sign would say "got permaculture". In light of a the grassroots approach, can I invite you to read a post inspired by this post and paul's podcast 099 about permaculture reaching a bigger audience? https://permies.com/t/11681/permaculture/evil-empire-building-podcast-one I would love to hear from you.
