Basically, long story short, my mom paid a bunch of money to fix up the pool that doesn't get well taken care of a few summers ago and now doesn't want it to just be a pond. If I can convince her that she will have not lost pool swimming abilities AND doesn't have to pay for chemicals I think maybe she would be into the idea of turning it into a pond/swimming pool.
I would love to know if there is a way to do this without ruining the plaster, chemical free, with lots of fish and plants (what kind of fish and plants, and would it be best to make it salt or fresh [if salt is even possible]). There is a typical swimming pool pump on it but I don't know if that's any good for pond pump purposes. If anyone has ideas or resources I'd love help.

Is there any way to have water running through it?

I'm not sure what you mean. There is a lot of water in it right now, but no one takes care of it much so I could perhaps convince my mom to let ME take care of it if it cost her nothing and there is still the ability to swim in it. Oh, and whatever I do not ruin the pool plaster.

Search Natural Swimming Pools at youtube for several how to ideas.

And Fred is right, even a pond still requires water movement.
So the old pool filter system is needed, or a new system to pump air
is needed.

Anyway check out the videos and you'll see. It's the best of both worlds.

If your pool is in the shade, it would help a lot, because if it is in full sun, it will be very difficult to prevent the water from turning dark green from phytoplankton (planktonic algae). Limiting the number of fish and nutrient load (fish food) would also help keep the water from getting too green. Good luck.
