I wanted to share a
video that I have of my dad and I capturing a swarm of
honey bees here in Michigan last year. I'll share the story, for those interested.
I stopped out to my dads to visit and was out in the
yard when I heard this familiar "hummmmm" noise. We had captured a couple swarms a year or so prior, so I knew what it was...and I got excited. So here I am, wearing shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops, walking amongst the swarming honey
bees. That's the first part of the video. Something that a lot of people might not know is that when honey bees are swarming, they are not (or
should I say
less) likely to sting. That's because they have bellies full of honey that they are transporting to their new home. It's the hive mind, and it is quite intriguing. Anyway... ONWARD!
So, I ran inside and put on some of dad's pants, and we suited up. He had an extra hive body laying around, so we put it near where the bees had clustered, laid a white-ish sheet in front of the hive body, and grabbed the loppers and a rope. I pulled the branch down so he could reach it, and c!ut the branch. He then took the branch over to the sheet and shook it... and to make a long story short, the bees marched right up into their new home.
