I am a newbie to elderberries, but I've ordered some starters (25 American Elderberry!) that I will receive and plant in NW Wisconsin in May.  I have some lowland, some yard and some woods to choose from. Any tips on getting them off to a good start of these choices?

Hey Jeff, my books goes over growing at length, but the short answer is
1. plant in decent soil where
2. they will have good water or irrigation
3. full sun for best yields
4. you can pot the them up and then transplant to give them a head start if you have a set up for that.

Lowland sounds like your most promising spot.  But yard is also great, as you can use house runoff to keep the elder in water.
