well obviously you are planning on PLANTING on the hugel bed..so yes it sure would help with a windbreak. There are figures on how high the windbreak, how far the effect is..but I don't have them handy right now. You might try googling windbreaks and you
should come accross those figures..
Trees here grow really well on hugelbeds..I have apples on some very short hugel beds (the
wood materials were put in a ditch and covered so they aren't really raised and they have "sunk" some since as well)..you might attempt some fruiting bushes up on the hugel beds and you'll have food as well as windbreak.
You also could put edible food forests on the hugel beds by putting several different layers of trees, shrubs, vines and perennials up there..that would give you not only food and beauty but wind control for your patio
