Hi there - I'll admit that I haven't searched too extensively yet on the topic, but I was wondering about hugelkultur and windbreak. Imagine there is a gazebo and patio area that runs west to east, which is the same direction the wind seems to blow. The property is a gentle sloped pasture and also slopes downward due east. Would a 2 - 3 foot high hugelkultur bed running north to south placed a few feet west of the gazebo/patio be effective at diverting the wind? Perhaps the bed would need to be more like 5 or 6 feet to do anything. I would also be interested to hear about other windbreak solutions that are effective but quick to install. I envision being at this property for around 2 - 3 years. Thanks for any input!

well obviously you are planning on PLANTING on the hugel bed..so yes it sure would help with a windbreak. There are figures on how high the windbreak, how far the effect is..but I don't have them handy right now. You might try googling windbreaks and you should come accross those figures..

Trees here grow really well on hugelbeds..I have apples on some very short hugel beds (the wood materials were put in a ditch and covered so they aren't really raised and they have "sunk" some since as well)..you might attempt some fruiting bushes up on the hugel beds and you'll have food as well as windbreak.

You also could put edible food forests on the hugel beds by putting several different layers of trees, shrubs, vines and perennials up there..that would give you not only food and beauty but wind control for your patio
