Just a quick question... I'm building my first hugelkultur bed, and since we have been having fairly dry summers, I'm digging down to put the logs. I've just hit a tree root--maybe a couple inch diameter--from a nearby (I'm digging a number of feet away from its drip line) maple tree. So I'm carefully digging around the root at this point.

My question is, is there any special considerations I should be aware of while trying to build a hugel on this piece of root? Especially, will having wet logs more or less touching/surrounding it cause any problems?

more likely that the tree would effect the hugel more than the other way 'round. the tree will likely drink deeply of whatever it can get.

Thanks for the reply. I can deal with that... more worried about the tree than the bed!

If the root is not damaged during digging I think the tree would be ok. I once had some fig trees that grew roots into every part of a hugelkulture. Every year the roots had to be removed but they kept coming back for more. No apparent harm to the trees.
