I can remember the days when most Scottish main roads were 10ft wide. It was of course impossible to pass oncoming vehicles, so there is a wider place every 100yds or so marked with a diamond‑shaped (actually a turned square) white sign. You simply had to get used to stopping. Some of those roads have been bypassed by new roads, e.g. Morar to Mallaig. I think that's the A850.
I remember waiting at the station for the 11.30 train from Queen St (Glasgow) because the village shopkeeper would collect the newspapers from that train.
