What happened to my trees?

Hi,
As you can see from the pictures, there appears to be some kind of damage to some balsam firs on my property. The damage looks old but does anyone know what caused the damage?

Oops I should have mentioned it’s on several trees all in a row. Could lightning do that?

I also think lightning. Never seen it hit multiples, around here usually there is a taller tree that takes the hit, but definately could happen.
