Hydroponic tobacco?

I was thinking about growing my own tobacco to make shisha. My roomate proposed the idea of hydroponic tobacco which I kind of like. Can tobacco thrive in a hydroponic setup?

I know the plants are mostly sprouted and grown to size to set into the fields hydroponically, but at for finishing I've never heard of that....
